Ghatkopar is also the name of the railway station. Ram Kadam of MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) won from Ghatkopar West constituency and is the present MLA. He defeated Poonam Mahajan Rao of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) with a very huge margin. Kadam secured 60343 votes as against Rao's 34115 votes. It is believed that the name Ghatkopar is derived from the word 'Ghat' as there were many ghats in the area.
